Microsoft has figured out why the Windows 10 October 2018 Update deleted data from some systems and produced a fixed version. The severity of the bug caused the company to cease distribution of the update last week; the fixed version is now being distributed to Windows Insiders for testing, ahead of a resumption of the wider rollout.

Microsoft is advising anyone affected by the bug to contact support. The bug caused files to be deleted, meaning that the only guaranteed way of restoring them is to retrieve them from a backup (if you have one). However, undeleted software can often recover recently deleted files, and Microsoft's support can apparently assist with this process at no cost for those bitten by the problem. In the meantime, the advice is to use affected PCs as little as possible; minimizing disk activity helps maximize the chance of a successful undeletion.

The software giant claims that only a small number of users were affected and lost data and has published an expla

Google+'s small, tight-knit community of loyal users are devastated that their favorite site will disappear next year. When John Lewis heard that Google+ was shutting down after the discovery of a security bug that left private profile data exposed, it felt like a crushing blow — even though he could see it coming. Lewis, a freelance writer who's spent nearly eight years living an isolated life in the Costa Rican rainforest, starts almost every morning sipping coffee while chatting with friends on Google+ and reading his feeds on the social network. "Plus has long been Google's orphan child," Lewis told CNBC by phone on Monday after Google announced that it's shuttering the seven-year-old service in the coming months. "I had hoped that it would stay that way forever."

Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have finally arrived, and there’s not much to be surprised about in terms of specs on paper. All the leaks were spot-on. There’s no Pixel Ultra. So while we would — in a normal year — be barely processing where these phones sit in the market, analyzing how they compare to the competition, and talking about their looks (or lack thereof), we’ve had the luxury of already having done more of that than average. That said, what’s new as of today?

There are some new details to peruse, but mostly what’s new is we’ve finally been able to see them for ourselves — in person. We’ve been able to get an idea of how they feel, and we can see them not just as phones with spec sheets going head-to-head with Samsung or OnePlus, but as Google’s centerpiece for its newly-expanded ecosystem. We already knew everything about Niagara Falls, but we’ve now been there ourselves to feel the mist hitting our face.

My first and most significant impression of the Google Pixel 3 a

nd Pixel 3 XL is that any opinion you have without playing with it yourself is an ill-informed one. I’m the person that jokingly threatened to boycott Google if they launched a phone with a notch and a chin, and I openly pleaded for something this year that was visually distinct from the generic notched designs that have invaded the Android space over the last year or two. And I also talked openly about just how dated the Google Pixel 2 looked last year, even compared to its already dated-looking predecessor.

Google is pulling the plug on their social network, Google+. Users still have the better part of a year to say their goodbyes, but if the fledgling social network was a ghost town before, news of its imminent shutdown isn’t likely to liven the place up. A quick check of the site as of this writing reveals many users are already posting their farewell messages, and while there’s some rallying behind petitions to keep the lights on, the majority realize that once Google has fallen out of love with a project there’s little chance of a reprieve.

To say that this is a surprise would be disingenuous. We’d wager a lot of you already thought it was gone, honestly. It’s no secret that Google’s attempt at a “Facebook Killer” was anything but, and while there was a group of dedicated users to be sure, it never attained anywhere near the success of its competition.

Google is about to have its Cambridge Analytica moment. A security bug allowed third-party developers to access Google+ user profile data since 2015 until Google discovered and patched it in March, but decided not to inform the world. When a user gave permission to an app to access their public profile data, the bug also let those developers pull their and their friends’ non-public profile fields. Indeed, 496,951 users’ full names, email addresses, birth dates, gender, profile photos, places lived, occupation and relationship status were potentially exposed, though Google says it has no evidence the data was misused by the 438 apps that could have had access.

LG phones are rarely the most popular of the bunch, but the company is still a veteran in the Android industry. They’re definitely not afraid to innovate with their G and V device lines. The LG V30, in particular, was an outstanding device with certain flaws, carrying top of the line specs as well as a display with greatly reduced bezels and a nice screen-to-body ratio. Now the company has officially announced two new, highly enticing offerings: LG V40 ThinQ, the latest flagship from LG, as well as the LG Watch W7, their newest Wear OS smartwatch.

When attempting to charge either the iPhone XS or XS Max using the Lightning connector, the end result may may be no charging occurring or an unresponsive phone. Apple needs to investigate and discover if this is a software or hardware problem.

The problem was highlighted on the Apple support forums when iPhone (XS$999.99) at Verizon Wireless owner xMASTIFFSx posted details of their charging experience and asked for help. If the phone is locked and therefore sleeping, plugging in a Lightning cable can result in no response from the handset. What should happen is the display lights up and indicates the battery is being charged.

In a court filing, Qualcomm has unveiled explosive charges against Apple for stealing "vast swaths" of its confidential information and trade secrets to improve the performance of chip sets provided by Intel.

Qualcomm hopes the court will amend allegations in its existing lawsuit against Apple accusing it of breaching the so called master software agreement that Apple signed when it became a customer of Qualcomm's earlier this decade.

The two companies have been embroiled in direct and indirect litigation around the globe centered on Apple's unwillingness to have its suppliers pay Qualcomm royalties it deems excessive for the iPhone.

The filing, made overnight in Superior Court in San Diego, is the latest salvo in that fight, designed to put pressure on Apple to settle. But Qualcomm's general counsel, Donald Rosenberg, told CNBC the case stands on its own and would have been filed regardless of the on-going dispute.

Only a week after a woman in New York claimed her new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 went up in flames, a Redditor's S7 Edge has also exploded, and this time the user has substantial proof.

Just a week ago, there were reports of a woman’s new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 exploding in New York. While we have our misgivings about the whole account, it’s a tad telling that yet another Samsung device has spontaneously gone up in flames.

According to /u/rokhana’s first-hand account on Reddit, his S7 Edge froze and shut down while trying to take a picture. Attempts to turn it back on proved futile, and he left it on his countertop in frustration, upon which the device promptly proceeded to go up in flames without warning.

Then again, so did the Note 8. The Note 9 and Note 8 are very similar-looking phones, but when it comes to bezels, which device takes the cake?

Apple is set to launch three new iPhones simultaneously on September 12 for only the second time in the iconic device's 11 year history. And for the first time in the iPhone's existence, Apple could have three new handsets land on shop shelves at the same time, after the iPhone X arrived later than than 8 and 8 Plus last year. That's going to give you, the people who buy iPhones, a tricky to decision as you’re faced with a number of price points and features. When you login to pre-order (from September 14 according to rumors) or step into store to pick up your new iPhone (which could be either September 21 or 28) you'll likely have to choose between the iPhone XS, supersized iPhone XS Plus or the 'affordable' iPhone 9.

On the hunt for an affordable “pure” Android phone with a hefty discount on Google’s Fi MVNO? Your only option to date would be 2017’s Moto X4 (the Pixel 2 doesn’t really count as “affordable”). More than a year later, Google is now offering the Moto X4 with more “gigs” to keep the smartphone alive on its Project Fi network.

Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi launched three smartphones that are part of its new Redmi 6 series today in India. That includes the Redmi 6A, the Redmi 6, and the Redmi 6 Pro, with prices ranging from $84 to $154. While the 6 Pro is a new model in Xiaomi’s budget lineup, the other two handsets are merely iterations of their predecessors from last year. According to data by IDC, Xiaomi sales account for almost 30 percent of phones in India. And it has achieved that number by mostly championing the segment of mid-range ($80-$200) phones. And it’s great, but it is becoming awfully difficult to keep up with Xiaomi’s offerings as there are so many to choose from each year – and many of them compete with each other at the same price point.

The Note 8 proved to be great return to form for one of Samsung’s best-loved productivity-focused lines. Yes, it was let down in a few areas — battery life being the main sore point — but the camera was most definitely not one of those. Is a camera improvement alone enough to justify an upgrade? Probably not, but if it were, is the camera exponentially better on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs the Samsung Galaxy Note 8?

You wait for years for a full-frame mirrorless camera to show up from the most dominant brands in photography, and then two show up at once. Right after Nikon announced its first serious step into high-end mirrorless with the Z7 and Z6, it looks like Canon’s own effort is imminent. Leaks from Japanese website Nokishita have revealed images of the camera, its spec sheet, and details on the initial lens lineup.

The camera is apparently called the EOS R, and looks a lot like a slimmed-down full-frame DSLR. The controls appear to be tweaked somewhat, with unmarked dials (not PASM) and a curious left-right switch on the back. The screen is fully articulated, and there’s a secondary information display on the top. The full-frame sensor is reportedly 30.3 megapixels, which would put it between the Nikon Z7 and Z6.
